Ultra-mobile personal computer-UMPC - TabletKiosk EO i7210

UMPC - TabletKiosk EO i7210

There are people who will never see the point of a UMPC (ultra-mobile personal computer). These devices don't have the portability of a smartphone or PDA and they don't have the processing power or storage of laptops. So what good are they?

That's missing the point, however; and using the TabletKiosk EO i7210 made us believers.

For those times when carrying a laptop is too much of a burden and working with a smartphone is impractical, a UMPC is just right. The i7210 weighs 1.8 pounds and measures 8.9 x 5.7x 1.0-inches, so you'll hardly know you have it on you, but when you need to work you have the power of a full computer at the ready.

Design
The i7210 we tested has a handsome black design that looks both cool and business-ready. (It also comes in silver.) The front offers a 7-inch TFT LCD that gives you a big view of your work, although occasionally not big enough. Some menu screens are too large for the screen and the on-screen buttons aren't visible.

There's no keyboard, naturally, but you have other input options available so you can find a combination that works for you. The rear upper-right corner holds a stylus and the screen is touch-sensitive. You can choose on-screen items as you would with a mouse, or tap an icon to call up an on-screen keyboard. And it allows you to call up an input field where you can write naturally.

The i7210 has convenient combinations of buttons placed for the left and right thumbs, which let you perform common actions. The left buttons let you make left and right mouse clicks or control media playback; the right buttons let you mouse around or scroll up or down.

In addition, the right-side buttons also let you call up the i7210's camera or video camera, which is placed on the upper right corner and faces the user. The i7210 has a 1.3MP CMOS camera capable of 15fps video capture. While we like the idea of including it, so that the device can be used in videoconferencing, we weren't crazy about the camera itself, which produces a dark, pixilated image.

The other buttons and ports are placed along the top of the machine, so that you won't press them accidentally during use. The top holds the Power button and a Hold slider, as well as status lights. The left top and side holds two USB 2.0 ports, which are covered by a thin rubber flap. The upper right side holds the volume controls.

There's no room for a CD/DVD-ROM slot, unfortunately, but the i7210 does offer a 4-in-1 memory card slot on the top, that supports SD, SDIO, MS, and MMC formats.

While the i7210 has less power than a notebook, it's not as much less as you might think. It runs off a 1.0-GHz Intel Pentium M chip, with 2MB of L2 cache, and offers 1MB of RAM. It can also store plenty with a 60GB hard drive running at 4,200 rpm.

Battery life is crucial with a UMPC, and we were happy with the i7210's performance. We used it for about 2 1/2 hours between chargings, which is a bit lower than a notebook could do, but not by that much.

The i7201 is as much a communication device as a work device, so it includes 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v1.2. We were able to connect quickly in our testing with either wireless system.

In use, the i7210 performs exactly like a Windows PC or notebook, right down to the third-party anti-virus software that's been no-so-helpfully preloaded (and warns that your computer might be at risk every time you start up). You'll find the usual set of applications, which include Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

This being a tablet, you'll also get several tablet apps that makes work easier. When you start up the i7210, you get the option of going through several tutorials that help familiarize you with tablet work. A desktop shortcut called TouchKit helps you set your stylus preferences, while another called Program Launcher lets you see your installed apps broken into categories. Also, a video capture tool allows you to see what's on your tablet's camera and record video from it.

Open the Start menu and you'll find three software collections for tablets, called the Education Pack, Experience Pack, and Touch Pack. With them, you can customize the launcher, draw on your tablet using a variety of brushes and pens, and play a few fun games like Hexic Deluxe and Sudoku.

The only problems we found when using the tablet is that the back gets hot after a while, making holding it uncomfortable, and preference windows often don't fit on the screen.

Accessories
You'll get a generous amount of accessories for your money, including a docking cradle (see top picture) and a slip case (see below). For chargings, we found it more convenient to simply use the power cord rather than the docking cradle, but the cradle serves other purposes, like holding the i7210 up at an angle so you can read off it. The cradle also lets you plug your tablet into an Ethernet cable or connect it to an external display with a VGA or S-video cable.

The slip case is better than most free cases, as it has a zipper, a handle and a little bit of padding. If you want to upgrade your case, you can find others on the TabletKiosk site.

You'll also get a printed guide that we wish had been a little longer and more detailed. The i7210 comes with a one year warranty.

Other optional accessories include a keyboard attachment and a disk drive attachment.

If you're looking for something more portable than a notebook that can help you with light computing on the go, the TabletKios Eo i7210 is a terrific choice. It's small enough to go anywhere, but powerful enough and fully-featured enough to handle whatever tasks you need to throw at it. We've seen the TabletKios Eo i7210 listed for between $1400 and $1,500.

Latest from Nokia-Nokia N810 Internet Tablet

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet

While the value of an Internet Tablet may be lost on you, it's becoming a lot easier to understand its value as Nokia's N810 takes over where the N800 left off.

Smaller than a notebook, yet bulkier than a cell phone, the N810 weighs 7.2 ounces and measures 2.8- x 5- x 0.5-inches. That makes it too large for pocket travel yet easy to throw in any bag. The N810 works alongside your phone, since it can connect via Bluetooth. Think of it as a communication tool that picks up where your phone leaves off.

Not a device for writing long documents or crunching numbers, the N810 is better for e-mailing, video chatting, and messaging.

Design
The biggest change with the N810 is the addition of a slide-out keyboard. Give the screen a slight nudge with either thumb and it slides up, revealing a QWERTY keyboard underneath. The keys are larger than you'd find on a smartphone, and we found using them to type instant messages and e-mails perfectly easy.

You'll find a clickable direction pad to the left of the keys, as well as a menu button for calling up the pulldown menu in any application.
There are two keys just to the left of the screen -- one for toggling between open applications and one for going back to the previous screen -- and above those sits the camera lens, which is perfect for making video calls. Skype is even included with the bundled software, so you don't need to install it.

The top includes buttons for going full screen, changing the volume, powering on the device, and locking the controls, while the right side holds power and headphone jacks. With so many controls around the edges, it's easy to press one when you didn't mean to.

The bottom holds a fold-out kickstand, so that you can prop it up while you use it. There's a miniSD slot for holding up to an 8GB card, but you'll need to fold the kickstand out to access it.

Software
The N810 runs Nokia's Internet Tablet 2008 operating system, which is Linux-based, and features a simple, customizable desktop and organization system that puts Windows Mobile to shame.

Finding your way around is easy, even for new users, and the selection of Internet, e-mail, chat, and VOIP software ensures that you'll have a lot to do. There are even a few games for when you have some downtime. The only thing missing is a calendar app. We'd love to see one that syncs with popular desktop software.

One warning, though: the packaging talks up the N810's GPS abilities, but doesn't mention the extra cost. Using the included Wayfinder Navigator application to get when you're going costs an extra $130 for a three-year subscription.

If you're serious about staying in touch while you travel and you're looking for a more convenient way to do it, check out the Nokia N810. It's smaller and cheaper than a notebook, yet big on communications options.

The N810 lists for $439.

Latest Nokia mobiles-Nokia 770 Wi-Fi Tablet

Nokia 770 Wi-Fi Tablet

In today's world of handheld gadgets, the Nokia 770 is an unusual device, far different from the slim, multi-purpose items we're used to seeing. This bulky, hefty portable is meant for one thing: going online. There's no cell phone and no productivity apps, just the tools you'll need for surfing, e-mailing, Instant Messaging, and making online calls. Even connection options are limited: the 770 can only connect via WiFi and Bluetooth (with help from a cell phone). It's not a bad choice for single-computer households that need a low-cost second option for going online, but don't think it's a business tool.

The Linux-based 770 measures 5.5 x 3.1 x 0.7 inches and weighs in at 8.1 ounces., so it's a fairly weighty device. You won't get it in a pants pocket; it's definitely a messenger bag kind of gadget. The reason for the size is the gorgeous 800 by 480 pixel, 65,000 color touch screen, which dominates the unit. The screen can display nearly the full width of most Web pages, so surfing with the 770 feels a lot more comfortable than with smaller handhelds.

Internet Tablet, front view.

Design
The 770 has a matte black finish and surprisingly few controls. You'll find a directional pad to the left of the screen, as well as buttons for jumping back one screen, calling up the menu, and going to the home screen. Above them sits the small speaker.

At the top of the 770 is a button for toggling the full-screen view, one for zooming in or out, and the power button. That's it for the controls.

Startup screen.

The stylus slides out from the right side, and the bottom holds power, USB, and headphone jacks. It also holds the RS-MMC (reduced size multimedia card) slot. The 770 comes with a 64MB card that you can use to store music. It also has 128 MB of Flash storage, 64MB of which is user accessible. If you need more space, Nokia will sell you a 128MB card for $39.95.

To protect that large screen, Nokia throws in a soft cloth bag and a metal slide cover. Both are poor choices. The bag has a drawstring, and you need to fully remove the 770 before you can use it. While fumbling to get the 770 in and out of the bag, you're more likely to drop it that if you'd had no bag at all.

In its protective drawstring bag.

And the metal slide cover doesn't attach to the 770, so once you slide it off, you need to turn it around and slide it on the back.

With protective metal sleeve.

It's a nuisance. We'd rather see a cover that's easy to retract and stays on the unit, so that you don't have to worry about where to stash it.

The 770 also comes with two wedge-shaped plastic pieces that can be fitted together to form a stand, so that you can prop the 770 up and view the screen at an angle. This is poor design at its worst. While it's a good idea to allow the 770 to stand by itself, some type of kickstand should have been built into the metal slide cover. No one is going to carry around these two extra pieces.

Propped up with the included stand.

Also included in the box are stereo earbuds, a USB connection cable, a quick start guide, and a manual. There's no software needed for transferring music from your PC, you just drag and drop. It can play unprotected AAC, MP3, WAV, and WMA files, as well as a few smaller formats.

Rear view.

Interface & Features
Power up the 770 and you'll be greeted by an efficient quick start desktop that displays all of the main options. At the top center is a Google search box, with an RSS feed reader below it. To the right are controls for Internet radio, personal contacts, and shortcuts. These items are customizable, so you can enter the Home screen edit mode and shift them around, delete them, or add others.

Startup screen.

Along the left side are controls for going to a Web bookmark, going to other apps not shown (like e-mail, instant messaging, or the Internet phone), or calling up a game. The top displays your screen brightness, volume, and battery level with small icons.

Getting around the various apps is easy enough, but the designers could have done more to make all the features accessible. For example, to browse the Web you tap the globe icon in the left column and choose to open a new window or open a bookmark. A Web page then appears (using the Opera 8 mobile browser), with toolbar controls along the bottom.

Since there's no keyboard, you'll need to enter text by tapping. Tap a text box and you'll get either a handwriting recognition bar on the bottom or an on-screen keyboard. Using the keyboard for anything long is tedious, but doable. The handwriting recognition, on the other hand, is awful. It entered spaces where it shouldn't and constantly got letters wrong. As a result, we spent more time correcting what we'd written than actually writing.

We found the page loading performance slow, despite being plugged into a fast wireless network. Pages displayed well, though, and surfing was a more pleasant experience that with a tiny PDA or cell phone.

Checking POP3 or IMAP e-mail is nice and simple with the 770. Click the apps button on the left side to create a new account, if you need to, or open your in-box. Setting up an account took us only a minute, and mail downloaded fairly quickly.

But composing was a chore due to the previously mentioned input options. Our responses tended to look like those from BlackBerrys: brief to the point of being telegraphic.

We like that the 770 includes a streaming radio player as one of its chief apps, but the developers didn't do much to make it usable. When you start out, it contains only one preset (to a pop hits channel). There's no easy way to add bookmarks for new streams: you'll need to find them in the Web browsers, copy them, and paste them into the audio app. (Adding new RSS streams to the feed reader requires the same tedious process.) Sound quality is adequate, but thin and lacking in range. The 770 comes with stereo headphones for a more pleasant listening experience.

Included stereo earphones.

When first launched, the 770 didn't include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calling or instant messaging tools, but now it does. Unfortunately, it doesn't include the big apps in either category. For IMing it offers Google Talk and Jabber; for Internet telephone calling, it has Google Talk. However, since the 770 now supports SIP-based VoIP solutions, standalone software applications such as Gizmo Project by SIPPhone, for example, are planned to be available in the future. The Gizmo Project allows users to make and receive calls from public telephony networks.

The rechargeable battery is rated for 3 hours of Web browsing or 7 days of standby time.

If you're looking for a way to bring surfing or e-mailing to the couch as you watch TV, or you need a way for the kids to get online without tying up your computer, the 770 makes sense. But its limited features will mean that it's not a good fit for many.
